What Hollywood’s houses do to their pipes — and what we do about it
Hollywood was laid out in the 1920s and much of the city east of I-95 was built by the 1950s — Hollywood Lakes, the downtown grid around Young Circle, North and South Central Beach. These are the oldest houses in our Broward service area, and behind the stucco and Dade County pine many still run original cast iron drains and galvanized steel supply. Galvanized rusts shut from the inside, so pressure falls off year by year and the water runs rusty after a vacation; cast iron drains slow, then back up. In these homes a camera inspection and a straight answer about what has years left is worth more than any amount of snaking.
The beachside — from the Broadwalk north to Hallandale and up to Dania Beach — adds salt. Hose bibs seize, outdoor water heater connections corrode, and anything metal on the exterior fails early; we use brass and stainless where we replace it. Hollywood Hills and Emerald Hills are 1960s and 70s construction with copper reaching pinhole age, and the neighborhoods west of the Turnpike are 1980s and 90s with the era's polybutylene and builder-grade heaters. The whole city drinks hard Biscayne-aquifer water. With a long, low-lying waterfront and a busy port, Hollywood also sees drains struggle after king tides and heavy summer rain, which is why cleanouts and backflow preventers earn their keep here.
